Who may produce a certified translation in the Netherlands?

Only translators listed in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv) and sworn before a Dutch court may issue a legally valid certified translation. The register is kept by Bureau Wbtv under the Sworn Interpreters and Translators Act (Wbtv).

Rbtv translators are assessed on translation competence, language proficiency and integrity. They are bound by a code of conduct and follow compulsory continuing education. All of our translators are Rbtv-registered.

Which documents are accepted by the IND, gemeenten and universities?

A translation of an official document signed by an Rbtv-registered sworn translator is accepted directly by the IND, all Dutch gemeenten, courts, Nuffic, universities and notaries. For use abroad an additional apostille or consular legalisation is often required.

The legal basis lies in the Sworn Interpreters and Translators Act (Wbtv) and the Hague Apostille Convention of 1961. We guide you through the right order of translation and any apostille — see our pages on apostille and legalisation.

Frequently Asked Questions about Certified Translations

Answers to the questions we hear most about certified translations, costs and procedures

Who can make a certified translation in the Netherlands?

Only a translator sworn before a Dutch court and entered in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv), kept by Bureau Wbtv. The signed statement and official stamp are what make the translation acceptable to Dutch authorities such as the IND and gemeenten.

How much does a certified translation cost?

From €39 for the first page for Dutch ↔ English or French and €59 for other languages, with €75 per following page. That price covers the translation, the sworn statement, the official stamp and our acceptance guarantee. A digital copy (€9.95), registered shipping (€9.95, free from €299) and an apostille (€99 per document) are optional.

How long does a certified translation take?

Standard delivery is 5–7 working days at no extra charge. Express (2–3 working days, +50%, minimum €55) and same-day (+100%, minimum €75, Dutch ↔ English/French only, ordered before 12:00) are available as options.

Do I also need an apostille?

For use abroad your document, and sometimes the translation, may need an apostille under the Hague Apostille Convention; Netherlands Worldwide explains when. We can add the apostille for €99 per document.

Will the IND accept the translation?

The IND requires foreign-language documents to be translated by a sworn (Rbtv) translator. Because we work only with Rbtv-registered translators, the translation meets that requirement, backed by our acceptance guarantee.
